Light / Sound:
Sound and Moving Image Explored Through Screening, Performance and DiscussionWednesday November 30th, 7pm
Sample Studios Auditorium, 3rd Floor, 1019 Sullivan’s Quay, Cork
This is a free event.
Light / Sound is part of Removed From The Place of Origin, a series of events programmed by MA Art & Proccess students at the Crawford College of Art and Design to run concurrently with the end of year exhibition.
2016 MA students Vicky Langan and Maximilian Le Cain draw on their longstanding collaboration both as artists and curators to explore the relationship between their original creative fields, experimental sound and moving image respectively, and the nature of collaboration itself. The evening will feature:
- The premiere projection of the Langan / Le Cain film
In The Place Of Origin.
- A panel talk with author/noise musician
Paul Hegarty, experimental filmmaker
Rouzbeh Rashidi, and composer
Karen Power.
- A live film performance by visual artist
Atoosa Pour Hosseini and sound artist
Mick O’Shea.
Crossovers between sound and film will be discussed and performed by participants who have all collaborated across these disciplines. Live sound with moving image, unconventional soundscapes in experimental film, and sound in the context of gallery-based video will be among the approaches broached in this cross-disciplinary dialogue.
Atoosa Pour Hosseini is an artist based in Dublin. Her work, which is influenced by historical avant-garde cinema, explores questions about illusion, reality, and perception through the media of drawing, painting, sculpture and film. Mick O’Shea has been instrumental in establishing a vibrant and growing sound art scene in Cork city. His mediums include sculpture, drawing, sound and cooking.
Paul Hegarty is a noise musician, head of UCC’s French Department, and author of a number of books on noise, sound art, music history, sound and society, and philosophy. Rouzbeh Rashidi is a driving force in Irish experimental film. As well as being a prolific filmmaker, he is founder and head of the Experimental Film Society collective. Karen Power is a composer, improviser and academic whose installation work and interest in field recordings has taken her music across many genres and art mediums. She specializes in using environmental and everyday sounds as catalysts for constructing new soundworlds.
Sound/performance artist Vicky Langan and experimental filmmaker Maximilian Le Cain work together in an audio-visual partnership built on the strikingly fitting match between Langan’s troublingly intense presence as a performer and Le Cain’s distinctively jarring visual rhythms. They also co-curated Black Sun, Cork's regular weirdo / outer limits music / film event, between 2009 and 2013.
The MA:AP end of year exhibition, held in the MA:AP studio adjacent to Sample Studios Auditorium, will close at the later-than-usual time of 7pm on November 30th.
