Jan Němec 1936 - 2016

This year is only three months old and already it is reaping a bitter harvest of some of cinema's greatest talents. Jan Němec is the latest to depart, one of the most brilliant directors to emerge from Eastern Europe in the '60s.

I spent most of the last months of 2015 writing a feature project which I hope to get off the ground over the next couple of years. It is deeply and very specifically informed by Němec's masterpiece debut Diamonds of the Night (1964).
